Getting ready for school

Starting Kindergarten is a milestone in the life of a child. It can be a most exciting time, but also holds some nervous moments for children and parents alike. Each year we hold a fantastic event called, “Welcome to Kindergarten”. It’s a time for our new Kindergarten students and their families to come to our school together. They meet the people with whom they will be spending a lot of time, including other students, teachers, support staff and the principal. They have the chance to visit the classrooms and do activities together that demonstrate the type of learning that they will be doing in the fall. And they get to ask lots of questions to find out what to expect.

The most important messages for parents of our new students are:
– You are your child’s first and most important teacher, and you always will be.
– The best way you can prepare your child for school is to spend time together. Talk, talk, talk to your children! Develop their language and you build a strong foundation for learning.
– Young children learn by doing. Involved them as much as possible in the things you do with your family every day – shopping, cooking, cleaning, doing errands, reading, playing games.

Here are some photos of our future students and their families learning together. It was a great day! What are your favourite memories of Kindergarten?
